The terms that show up on a foundation job
Plain-English definitions for the language in our specs, quotes and datasheets, so nothing gets lost in translation.
- Vibratory driver
- A driver that installs or extracts piles by rapidly oscillating them, reducing soil friction. The workhorse for sheet and H-pile.
- Impact hammer
- A hammer that drives piles with repeated high-energy blows, diesel or hydraulic, used where high capacity or hard driving is needed.
- Eccentric moment
- The measure of a vibratory driver's shaking effort. Matching it to the pile and carrier is the difference between driving and refusing.
- Side-grip
- An excavator-mounted vibratory unit that clamps a pile from the side, so one machine can pick, pitch and drive without leads.
- Sheet pile
- Interlocking steel sections driven edge-to-edge to form a continuous wall, for excavation support, cofferdams and cut-offs.
- H-pile
- An H-shaped structural steel section driven as a bearing pile or used as a soldier pile in retention systems.
- CFA (continuous flight auger)
- A bored piling method where a hollow-stem auger is drilled to depth and concrete pumped through it as the auger withdraws.
- Kelly bar
- The telescopic drive shaft on a rotary rig that transmits torque and crowd to the drilling tool for large-diameter bored piles.
- Micropile
- A small-diameter, high-capacity drilled and grouted pile, used for underpinning and in restricted-access or difficult ground.
- Tieback / ground anchor
- A tensioned anchor drilled and grouted into the ground to hold back a retaining wall or stabilise a slope.
- Deep soil mixing (DSM)
- A ground-improvement method that mechanically blends binder into weak soil in place to form columns or panels of stronger material.
- Jet grouting
- High-pressure injection that erodes and mixes soil with grout to create columns, used for cut-offs, underpinning and stabilisation.
- CPT (cone penetration test)
- Pushing an instrumented cone into the ground to profile soil strength and layering continuously, the backbone of site investigation.
- PIT (pile integrity test)
- A low-strain test that checks an installed pile for defects and confirms its length from the reflection of a small hammer blow.
- SPT energy
- The hammer energy delivered in a Standard Penetration Test. Measuring it makes blow-count data comparable and defensible.
- Power pack / power unit
- The diesel-hydraulic unit that feeds a vibratory or impact driver. It has to be sized to the hammer or the hammer starves.
- Landed price
- The all-in cost to get a unit to your location, equipment, configuration, freight, duty and port handling, quoted as one number.
- Refusal
- The point at which a pile will not advance further under driving, taken as a sign it has reached adequate bearing.
